bret michaels - more medical problems

Bret Michaels diagnosed with heart problem

By Alan Duke, CNN
(CNN) -- Rock singer Bret Michaels had another health setback this week when doctors found a hole in his heart that they think caused him to suffer a warning stroke, his publicist said.
Michaels, 47, may still be able to appear on the season finale of the reality show "Celebrity Apprentice" on Sunday, his doctor said.
The announcement did not say whether Michaels' plan to resume touring with his rock band May 28 will be changed.
The singer felt the left side of his body growing numb this week, prompting him to return to the Phoenix, Arizona, hospital that treated him for a massive brain hemorrhage a month ago, a statement from the publicist said.
His doctors concluded that Michaels had suffered a transient ischemic attack, which they said is a warning stroke, that was prompted by a patent foramen ovale, a hole in his heart, she said.
Dr. Joseph Zabramski, the neurosurgeon who treated his brain hemorrhage, said, "The positive patent foramen ovale is devastating news."
Zabramski said, "The good news is that it is operable and treatable, and we think we may have diagnosed the problem that caused the transient ischemic attack, or warning stroke."
The heart problem was probably not related to Michaels' brain hemorrhage, he said.
"I realize Bret wants to make a full recovery so that he can be active with his family, attempt to attend the finale of 'Celebrity Apprentice' and especially get back on the road to continue making music," Zabramski said.
More medical tests are needed to determine what happens next, he said.
"For now, Bret will be treated with outpatient care, which includes a daily injection of Lovenox [a blood thinner to reduce the chance of blood clots] and blood tests," he said.
Janna Elias, Michaels' representative, said the rocker is in good spirits despite the latest medical report.
"He is up, walking, talking, continuing his daily rehab and very happy to be alive, but he has made it clear he is sick and tired of being in the hospital and is ready to rock again," Elias said.
Michaels is the lead singer for the '80s glam-metal "hair band" Poison. He became a reality TV star by headlining the VH1 show "Rock of Love With Bret Michaels." He has also appeared on "Celebrity Apprentice."
His Roses & Thorns tour with the Bret Michaels Band was interrupted when the singer was stricken by an excruciating headache on April 22.
Doctors at the Barrow Neurological Institute diagnosed him with a rupture in his brain, but they never pinpointed the cause.
Michaels was released from the hospital 12 days later with orders to rest.

Slipknot bassist Paul Gray found dead at Urbandale hotel

Register staff report • May 24, 2010

Des Moines, Iowa; May 24, 2010 - Urbandale police are investigating the death of the bass guitarist for Grammy award-winning Slipknot at a local hotel.

Paul Dedrick Gray, 38, of Johnston was found dead at approximately 10:50 a.m. today by an employee at TownePlace Suites, 8800 Northpark Drive, police said.

There was no evidence of foul play, police said, but the investigation is ongoing.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. Toxicology tests will be done.

Gray was a founding member of Slipknot and one of only two members not born in Iowa. The band broke into the mainstream with a platinum-selling self-titled debut in 1999. Two follow-ups, 2002's "Iowa" and 2005's "Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)" also went platinum. The band has been nominated for seven Grammy awards, winning in 2006 for best metal performance.

In 2008, Slipknot released its most recent album, “All Hope Is Gone,” and toured arenas, including its first-ever show at Wells Fargo Arena in January. The band ended its tour cycle in October, and members of the band have been working on individual projects since then.

Gray was arrested on drug charges in June 2003, after he crashed his Porsche into a Des Moines motorist at Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Carpenter Avenue.

Police charged Gray with marijuana possession, cocaine possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and a red-light violation. He later pleaded guilty to operating while under the influence of drugs, and was sentenced to one year of informal probation.

His court file included a handwritten note from Dr. Joe Takamine, who described a conversation with Gray about his “sporadic use of various drugs and of the long periods of abstinence in between.”

Takamine concluded that Gray was not addicted to any drug and understood the consequences of drug use.

"In light of his past and present history and because of his great love of music, I feel that Mr. Gray will refrain from future use of mind-altering chemicals," Takamine wrote.

Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol Assembles Alt-Country Supergroup

by Andrew Tijs - May 17 2010

Members of Snow Patrol, R.E.M., Belle & Sebastian, and more band together to record a country concept album.
Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody has brought famous friends together for his Tired Pony project, musically inspired by alt-country heroes Wilco, Calexico, Lambchop and Smog.
The band includes Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey of R.E.M. and Richard Colburn of Belle & Sebastian, with guest spots from actress/singer Zooey Deschanel, ex-Snow Patrol lyricist Iain Archer, producer Jacknife Lee, and Tom Smith of Brit indie rockers Editors.
Tired Pony’s debut album will be called The Place We Ran From and will be released through Fiction Records on July 12. It was recorded in January in Portland, Oregon.
Lightbody had been toying with the idea since Snow Patrol wrapped up their 2009 world tour. In an interview with BBC 6Music, he promised to perform with the group in London “to let people see that it was a proper band, not just this odd floating idea."
Along that line of thinking, he is already musing over a full tour and another album before Tired Pony's debut has even been released.

Metal rocker Ronnie James Dio dies
Died Sunday morning surrounded by family and friends

Ronnie James Dio, whose soaring vocals, poetic lyrics and mythic tales of a never-ending struggle between good and evil broke new ground in heavy metal, died Sunday, according to a statement from his wife and manager. He was 67.

Dio revealed last summer that he was suffering from stomach cancer shortly after wrapping up a tour in Atlantic City, N.J., with the latest incarnation of Black Sabbath, under the name Heaven And Hell.

"Today my heart is broken," Wendy Dio wrote on the singer's website, adding he died at 7:45 a.m. Sunday. "Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.

"Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all," Wendy Dio continued. "We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us … . Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever."

Dio rose to fame in 1975 as the first lead singer of Rainbow, the heavy metal band put together by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who had just quit Deep Purple.

Replaced Ozzy

Dio then replaced legendary vocalist Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1980 with the critically acclaimed album Heaven And Hell, considered by many critics to be one of the finest heavy metal albums of all time.

His on-again, off-again tenure with Black Sabbath touched off an intense debate among fans as to which singer was the true essence of the band — a discussion that lasted until his death.

He also enjoyed a successful solo career with his self-titled band, Dio, in between his three stints with Black Sabbath (1980-82; 1992; and 2007-2009), when the band toured as Heaven And Hell, to differentiate it from Osbourne-led versions of Sabbath.

Many of his most memorable songs revolved around the struggle between good and evil and he also drew heavily on medieval imagery in songs like Neon Knights, Killing The Dragon and Stargazer.

"He possessed one of the greatest voices in all of heavy metal, and had a heart to match it," said Twisted Sister guitarist Jay French, whose band toured with Dio since 1983, and was to do so again this summer at European rock festivals. "He was the nicest, classiest person you would ever want to meet."

Dio organized an all-star charity collaboration in 1986 called Hear N Aid to raise money for famine relief in Africa.

His solo hits included Rainbow In The Dark, The Last In Line and Holy Diver.

Vocalist Thomas Mars, bassist Deck d'Arcy, and guitarist Chris Mazzalai started as a garage band based out of Mars' house in the suburbs of Paris. In 1995, Laurent Brancowitz, Mazzalai's older brother, permanently joined the band on guitar after the end of the short-lived band Darlin' he formed with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (who together became Daft Punk). The group got their touring start on the French bar circuit doing Hank Williams and Prince covers. Two years later the band took on the name Phoenix and pressed 500 copies of a single on their own label, Ghettoblaster. Shortly after, they were signed to the Paris-based Source Records.
