Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol Assembles Alt-Country Supergroup
by Andrew Tijs - May 17 2010Members of Snow Patrol, R.E.M., Belle & Sebastian, and more band together to record a country concept album.
Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody has brought famous friends together for his Tired Pony project, musically inspired by alt-country heroes Wilco, Calexico, Lambchop and Smog.
The band includes Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey of R.E.M. and Richard Colburn of Belle & Sebastian, with guest spots from actress/singer Zooey Deschanel, ex-Snow Patrol lyricist Iain Archer, producer Jacknife Lee, and Tom Smith of Brit indie rockers Editors.
Tired Pony’s debut album will be called The Place We Ran From and will be released through Fiction Records on July 12. It was recorded in January in Portland, Oregon.
Lightbody had been toying with the idea since Snow Patrol wrapped up their 2009 world tour. In an interview with BBC 6Music, he promised to perform with the group in London “to let people see that it was a proper band, not just this odd floating idea."
Along that line of thinking, he is already musing over a full tour and another album before Tired Pony's debut has even been released.
